Yaroslavl’
The town
Yaroslavl is a
beautiful old town on the Volga, part of the Golden Ring of historical towns encircling Moscow (which is less than four
hours away on the train). It has
many fine religious buildings and is famous for being
the home of the first theatre in Russia. Many
of the churches are now being given back to the Orthodox Church, having
been museums or warehouses. Within easy reach of Yaroslavl are the Golden Ring
towns of Kostroma, Uglich and Rostov Veliki, which have many fine ancient buildings.
Yaroslavl will give you the experience of a real Russian town. There are
lest foreigners living here and this will make you need to use your Russian,
not just in classes, but also to get around the town. It also has the advantage
that prices are much cheaper than in Moscow or St Petersburg.
